The Bugbear of Literacy was first published in England in 1949, and has been out-of-print and scarce for many years. In the U.S.A. and Canada it was published under the title 'Am I my Brother’s Keeper?' in 1947.

This new, enlarged edition includes an article only recently found among the author’s papers, entitled “The Bugbear of Democracy, Freedom and Equality”, hitherto unpublished in book form. His later books and essays form some of the most remarkable and enlightening works in the English language on the subject.
